Is this scheme really free? Are there hidden costs?
For the vast majority of eligible households, yes, it is 100% free. The ECO4 grant covers the full cost of the assessment, products, and installation. In rare cases where the required work is exceptionally extensive, a small contribution might be required, but this would be clearly explained and agreed upon after your free home survey. There are no hidden fees or charges.
Who is paying for these upgrades?
The ECO scheme is funded by the largest energy suppliers in the UK (like British Gas, E.ON, Scottish Power, etc.). They are obligated by the government to help households improve their energy efficiency. It is not funded by general taxation.
I'm a private tenant, can I still apply?
Yes, you can. If you and your household meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply. However, we will need your landlord's permission to proceed with the survey and any installation work. The upgrades are free, so most landlords see it as a valuable, no-cost improvement to their property.
What if I don't receive any benefits?
You may still qualify through a route called LA Flex (Local Authority Flexible Eligibility). This is for households who aren't on benefits but have a low income (typically under £31,000 per year) or have health conditions made worse by living in a cold home. When you complete our eligibility checker, we automatically see if you could qualify for this route.
How long does the whole process take?
Timelines can vary, but typically, after you complete the eligibility check, you can expect a call to arrange your free survey within 2-3 working days. The installation is usually scheduled within 2-4 weeks after the survey is complete and the funding is approved.
